So Solid Crew: The Battersea Collective Who Put Garage at No. 1

October 23, 2026 · by Music Folks

So Solid Crew were a sprawling London collective that took UK garage out of the pirate radio underground and into the top of the charts. Their breakthrough single, “21 Seconds,” gave eight MCs a short slot each and became a UK No. 1 in the summer of 2001.

Quick Facts

  • Formed: 1998
  • From: Battersea, London
  • Known for: a collective that began with 19 members and grew to around 30, including Asher D, Lisa Maffia, Romeo, Harvey, Megaman and Oxide & Neutrino
  • Genre: UK garage, hip hop, early grime influences
  • Key songs: “21 Seconds,” “They Don’t Know,” “Haters,” “Broken Silence”
  • Key album: They Don’t Know (2001, UK No. 6)

From Pirate Radio to Pop

The crew built its name on pirate radio, where a Sunday slot on Delight FM called “So Solid Sundays” made the group a fixture of London’s garage scene. That slot ended with a last show on Christmas Day 2001, by which time the group was already a national name.

Their sound sat between garage’s skippy beats and the harder, rap-led approach that would later be called grime. The Skinny has argued that the group helped bridge the two, and that it opened doors for later London artists such as The Streets, Dizzee Rascal and Wiley.

“21 Seconds”

Released on August 6, 2001, “21 Seconds” was the second single from their debut album. The title describes the format: each MC gets roughly 21 seconds, about 12 bars at around 140 beats per minute. According to Megaman, the crew had around ten or eleven members at the time, so the verses had to be short.

The single reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, sold 118,135 copies in its first week and about 423,000 in total, and was certified Platinum by the BPI. Its video won British Video of the Year at the 2002 Brit Awards. The follow-ups “They Don’t Know” (No. 3) and “Haters” (No. 8) kept the group in the top ten, and the album They Don’t Know reached No. 6 in October 2001.

After the Peak

Later singles such as “Broken Silence” (No. 9 in 2003) did well, but the second album, 2nd Verse, only reached No. 70. Members pursued solo careers, acting and television, including Romeo and Harvey, who each appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2012. The group announced a reunion tour in 2013 and returned to the stage for anniversary shows afterward.

Today, So Solid Crew are remembered less for sales than for timing: a big, loud group of young Londoners who briefly put the city’s street sound at the center of British pop. Information about their current plans is limited, so check official channels for the latest.
