A Chance Meeting on the King’s Road
Tennant and Lowe met on 19 August 1981 at the Chelsea Record Centre on King’s Road. Lowe was in the middle of an architecture degree at the University of Liverpool. In June 1982 he joined the teen magazine Smash Hits as news editor, and he stayed there until 1985, when the duo signed with Parlophone.
Their breakthrough had an American detour. In 1983 Tennant traveled to New York to interview The Police for the magazine and met the producer Bobby Orlando, whose work the pair admired. Orlando produced an early version of “West End Girls” in 1984. A re-recorded version became a UK No. 1 in January 1986 and also reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
The Hits Keep Coming
The follow-up run was remarkable. “It’s a Sin” reached No. 1 in 1987, their cover of “Always on My Mind” was the Christmas No. 1 that year, and “Heart” topped the UK chart in 1988. Their duet with Dusty Springfield, “What Have I Done to Deserve This?,” reached No. 2 in both the UK and the US. Later highs included “Go West” (No. 2 in 1993) and the album Very, their only UK No. 1 album.
Across the years they have collected more than 40 UK top-30 singles, and the 1999 edition of the Guinness Book of Records named them the most successful duo in UK music history. Their official history claims sales of more than 100 million records worldwide.
Still Going
In 2012 the duo performed “West End Girls” in the closing ceremony of the London Olympics. They received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2009, the NME Godlike Genius award in 2017 and the Pop Pioneers award at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2024. Their fifteenth studio album, Nonetheless, came out in April 2024. This year they played five nights in April 2026 at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, London, performing only B-sides, non-album singles and deep cuts, and they have festival and open-air dates on the calendar for the summer.
As of October 2026, Pet Shop Boys remain active, and their catalog of smart, danceable pop keeps finding new listeners.
