Placebo: The London Band Built on a Chance Meeting at a Tube Station
October 18, 2026 · by Music Folks
Placebo are an alternative rock band formed in London in 1994 around two constants: singer and guitarist Brian Molko and bassist Stefan Olsdal. With their androgynous image, glam-tinged guitars and Molko’s unmistakable nasal voice, they carved out a space of their own in 1990s British rock and have kept at it for three decades.

Two Schoolmates in South Kensington
Molko was born in Brussels in 1972 to an American father and a Scottish mother, and the family moved often before settling in Luxembourg. Olsdal was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1974, and also grew up partly in Luxembourg; the two attended the same school there but were not friends. In London, a chance meeting at South Kensington tube station led Molko to invite Olsdal to a gig by his band with drummer Steve Hewitt, and the trio that became Placebo took shape from there.
The Rise
Their self-titled debut arrived in 1996 and reached No. 5 in the UK. “Nancy Boy” (1997) reached No. 4, and “Pure Morning” (1998) did the same. Without You I’m Nothing went platinum in the UK, and Black Market Music (2000) peaked at No. 6 in Britain and No. 1 in France. All eight of their studio albums have reached the UK top 20.
The drum stool changed several times. Robert Schultzberg left in 1996, Hewitt was removed in 2007, and Steve Forrest, who joined in 2008, left in 2015. Since then Molko and Olsdal have worked as a duo, joined by touring and studio musicians.
Recent Years
Never Let Me Go, released in March 2022 on So Recordings, was their eighth studio album and their highest-charting in the UK. A documentary, This Search for Meaning, followed in October 2024. To mark their 30th anniversary, the band announced Placebo RE:CREATED, a reimagining of the debut album built from the original master tapes, released on 19 June 2026. Of the project they said, “It’s not about improving it, there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s about completing it,” according to Radio X. An anniversary tour started in Porto, Portugal, on 28 September 2026 and runs through European cities into early December, with UK dates that include Manchester, London and Cardiff.
As of October 2026, Placebo are active and on the road, three decades after two schoolmates found each other in London.
