Moby: The Punk Kid Who Made Electronic Music’s Biggest Album
October 14, 2026 · by Music Folks
Moby is the New York musician behind Play, the 1999 album that became the best-selling electronic record of all time. A former punk guitarist who broke through on the early 1990s rave scene, he has since moved between dance music, ambient, orchestral reworkings and memoir writing, all while campaigning for animal rights.
Quick Facts
- Born: Richard Melville Hall, September 11, 1965, Harlem, New York City
- Raised: Darien, Connecticut
- Genre: Electronic, dance, ambient
- Key albums: Play (1999), 18 (2002), Reprise (2021), Future Quiet (2026)
- Key songs: “Go” (UK No. 10, 1991)
From Punk to Rave
Raised by his mother, mostly in Darien, Connecticut, Moby grew up with little money; his stage name comes from his family’s link to Moby-Dick author Herman Melville. In 1983 he joined the hardcore punk band Vatican Commandos as guitarist. By the start of the 1990s he had moved into dance music, and his single “Go” became a rave anthem, reaching No. 10 on the UK Official Singles Chart in 1991.
Play
Play arrived in 1999 and started slowly, selling only around 6,000 copies worldwide in its first week. “When Play was released, it kind of failed,” he told MusicTech in 2024. But every one of its 18 tracks was licensed for commercial use, and the album went on to become a huge success, eventually selling around 12 million copies.
After Play
He followed it with 18 (2002), Hotel (2005), Last Night (2008), Destroyed (2011) and Innocents (2013). In recent years he has revisited his catalog with orchestral arrangements on Deutsche Grammophon, first on Reprise (2021) and then on Resound NYC (2023), and released Always Centered at Night (2024), on which each track features a different guest vocalist. He has also written two memoirs, Porcelain (2016) and Then It Fell Apart (2019), and was the subject of the 2021 documentary Moby Doc.
Animal Rights
Moby went vegan in 1987, and animal rights has become his main cause. He opened the vegan restaurant Little Pine in Los Angeles in 2015, which closed in 2022, and in 2024 he gave all profits from a run of European shows marking Play’s 25th anniversary to animal-rights groups.
Where He Is Now
As of October 2026, Moby is active again. His 23rd studio album, Future Quiet, a set of piano and ambient pieces, came out in February 2026. He played Coachella in April, then toured Europe over the summer on what was billed as his biggest European tour in a decade.
