Liam Gallagher: The Voice of Oasis, on His Own Terms
October 14, 2026 · by Music Folks
Liam Gallagher is the voice of Oasis: the snarling, swaggering frontman whose sound and stance came to define British guitar music in the 1990s. When the band fell apart in 2009 he had to prove he could stand up without his older brother’s songs. He did it the hard way, first with Beady Eye and then with a string of UK No. 1 solo albums, before the Gallaghers patched things up for one of the biggest reunions in rock.

A Burnage Kid With a Voice
Liam is the youngest of three sons born to Irish parents Peggy and Tommy Gallagher, who moved the family from Longsight to nearby Burnage soon after he was born. He went to Barlow RC High School in Didsbury and left in 1990 with four GCSEs. Not long afterward, school friend Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan asked him to sing in a local band called The Rain. The band became Oasis, and in 1991 older brother Noel joined as lead guitarist and songwriter. The rest of that story, from Creation Records to the split, is told in our Oasis post.
Beady Eye
When Noel quit Oasis in August 2009, Liam carried on with the remaining members. With guitarists Gem Archer and Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock he formed Beady Eye in London that same year. Their debut, Different Gear, Still Speeding, arrived in February 2011 and made the UK Top 5, and the follow-up, BE (2013), climbed to No. 2. The band announced it was finished in October 2014.
Going Solo
Liam’s first solo album, As You Were, came out on October 6, 2017. It went straight to No. 1 in the UK and reached No. 30 in the US, and that year he also picked up the Q Award for Best Live Act. Why Me? Why Not. (2019) and C’mon You Know (2022) both topped the UK chart as well.
In June 2022 he played two nights at Knebworth Park to around 170,000 people, nearly 26 years after he had played there with Oasis. The live album Knebworth 22 gave him another UK No. 1 in 2023. In March 2024 he teamed up with former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire for the album Liam Gallagher & John Squire, which also went to No. 1 on the Official Albums Chart.
The Reunion
On August 27, 2024, Liam and Noel announced that Oasis were back. Around 14 million people chased 1.4 million UK and Ireland tickets, and the sale set off a row over dynamic pricing. The Oasis Live ‘25 tour opened in Cardiff on July 4, 2025, and moved through North America, Asia, Australia and South America before closing in São Paulo on November 23. Pollstar put the gross at about $405 million from more than 2.2 million tickets, the second-biggest worldwide tour of 2025.
Where He Is Now
As of October 2026, Oasis have announced a 2027 run of stadium shows across the UK, Europe and the US, including eleven nights at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium, Slane Castle and a return to Knebworth. Liam told fans the run could be the band’s last, posting, “This could be the last time, so get involved.” He has said there are no plans for a new Oasis album, and no new solo record had been announced at the time of writing.
