From a Garden Outbuilding to No. 1
The band began in a small outbuilding at the bottom of a garden in Bailiff Bridge, with brothers Danny and Richard McNamara at the center. Bassist Steve Firth joined in 1996, completing the lineup that still plays together today. Their first single, “All You Good Good People,” came out in February 1997 on the independent label Fierce Panda.
Their debut album, The Good Will Out, followed on June 8, 1998. It reached No. 1 in the UK, went gold on its first day and sold more than 500,000 copies, according to Wikipedia. Two more albums, Drawn from Memory (2000) and If You’ve Never Been (2001), both landed inside the UK top 10.
Hiatus and Comeback
After a few quieter years, Embrace returned in 2004 with “Gravity,” a No. 7 single, and the album Out of Nothing, which went to No. 1. This New Day repeated the feat in March 2006, and the band was chosen to record England’s official song for that summer’s World Cup, “World at Your Feet.” An extended break followed.
The group began writing again around 2013, signed to Cooking Vinyl, and released a self-titled album in 2014 and Love Is a Basic Need in 2018. In 2022 came How to Be a Person Like Other People, which reached No. 9 and was the band’s eighth consecutive studio album to chart in the UK top 10. Firth and Heaton also formed a punk band, Land Sharks, in 2018.
Where They Are Now
As of October 2026, Embrace are marking their 30th anniversary. Their ninth studio album, Avalanche, was scheduled for release on June 12, 2026, through Cooking Vinyl, led by the single “Road to Nowhere.” Danny McNamara has described the record as their most honest and raw work, recorded with a deliberately rough-around-the-edges feel. A 14-date UK tour runs through November 2026, from Aberdeen to Cardiff, with a Leeds homecoming show on November 13.
